Learning and swimming

Like we say in Italian "He who walks with the lame learns to limp" :-)

Good morning everybody,

I hope you’re having a nice start to the week.

With a huge delay, I've finally started reading James Clear's "Atomic Habits", after spending months reading the newsletter and reading about habits and tons of further content that was a rewording of his words.

I've just started it. However, whenever languages are mentioned, I can't resist spreading what I find.

When I read this paragraph many thoughts came to my mind.

First of all, I think about intensive courses - which to me are still like a sort of magic solution that doesn't work for 90% of the people, because we're inclined to get "a shot of learning" and then forget about practicing the days after. It can be a nice experience, sure, but don't talk to me about the actual speaking and mastery of the language.

A lot of my students are people having studied sciences or engineering.

Well, to speak their language I think that for the normal person, the relationship between the brain and learning is like the shear thickening in fluid dynamics 😆

At least regarding languages, all the worst failures I've seen happened when someone wanted to forcefully get the notions in one's brain as if it was just a container to fill out.

⭕ Think about cannonball diving into the water - it's painful. That's a bit the same. One shot of learning = one cannonball diving.

⭕ But what if you head dive? The impact is different. The small habits, the small moments of practice that I offer throughout working on WhatsApp are like an endless head dive that lasts until you get to the result you desire

Less mess, less pain, and also better results because you go deeper into the water just like you progress more in your learning.
